Choose Real Wood for a Home That Lasts

When starting a building or renovation project, the choice of materials is crucial for aesthetic, durability, and sustainability considerations. This was also the starting point for Arkitektkontoret Vest, which recently completed a modern detached house in Rogaland, Norway. In this house, surrounded by beautiful nature, the goal was to create a unique and personal home that harmonises with its surroundings. Managing Director Åshild Slettebø shares her thoughts on the choice of materials and why real wood was a natural choice for the project.

When the architect gets to choose

Arkitektkontoret Vest recently completed a modern detached house in Rogaland, where Managing Director Åshild Slettebø has had a clear philosophy: natural materials are the way to a harmonious and sustainable home.

- “We always start from nature's palette and choose materials that last,” says Slettebø. “It's important to us that the house is adapted to the surrounding landscape and that the materials we choose create a holistic and calm expression.”

For this project, we chose Chaletino, Oak Traditional Live Pure from BOEN Flooring - a parquet floor featuring long, wide planks that create an exclusive and natural feel. Using the same flooring throughout the house makes a seamless whole, enhancing the feeling of spaciousness and tranquillity.

Why choose real wood?

It can be tempting to opt for ‘maintenance-free’ materials, but natural is often the best choice - for you, your home, and the environment. Real wood flooring has a unique ability to age with dignity. Over time, it develops a beautiful patina that tells a story of a life lived, unlike synthetic alternatives that wear out and require more frequent replacement.

Choosing natural materials, such as wood, is also about sustainability. Wood is a renewable raw material, and by choosing a local supplier like BOEN, you further reduce your environmental footprint. BOEN's hardwood flooring is produced with care for nature, making it a responsible choice for the future.

A choice for generations

As architects and designers, we understand the importance of using materials that feel good to walk on, are pleasant to touch, and contribute to a warm and inviting home. A genuine wood floor offers a sensory experience that can't be replicated with artificial materials. It's soft, it's warm, it's alive - it's something you must experience. So, when choosing a floor for your next project, think long-term.
